Has Memorial Day Been Sold Out?

Have Americans forgotten how to celebrate Memorial Day? It seems that many Americans no longer have the proper reverence for this day. Civics is not taught in the public schools anymore, God has been removed from official government proceedings, and more and more it seems that the popular way to remember Memorial Day is with big sales at K-Mart and Sears.

Question: Is Memorial Day supposed to be fun?

Really…no, I don’t think so. Meaningful, respectful, solemn, thoughtful…yes. Fun? Not so much.

On this day, we need to acknowledge, honor, and thank those who have made great sacrifices for our continued freedom and liberty.

?I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the gloom I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is worth more than all the means…?

I agree with you that we should all be very respectful of what our fallen soldiers have sacrificed to give us the freedoms we have today. We have this day to honor them, and honor them we should. But, as long as people do honor and remember them I don’t have any problem with celebrating also, on this day. After all, probably most of the soldiers who have passed on also loved to bar-b-que and get together with friends and family, etc. The big sales, though, I do get your point. Everything these days has to be commercialized. Such a shame. Nice post!

I think a lot of it has to deal with what the parents teach there children. I am a navy Vet. and I took my kids to the dday memorial so they can see somethings first hand and learn about it.

I think that Memorial Day should mean more to people than a day off, bbq, and a good sale. I am not sure I understand you when you say it should not be fun. Do you mean no fun for just adults or for children also?

I guess I think that as a Christian I am supposed to have a Memorial Day for Christ everyday and to me that does mean take the fun out of it.

I also feel that as far as our fallen soldiers we should remember them everyday as well, they are the reason we have the freedom to have fun in this country.

Those are obviously my opinions and I totally respect yours. Great post. Hope you don’t mind a little difference of opinion on part of it.

Yes, the spirit behind Memorial Day has long since been sold up the river. Stores are packed, people are drunk around the BBQ and a whole new generation is oblivious to why we ‘celebrate’ Memorial Day. And what we have as a result of the sacrifices of the thousands of fallen soldiers in America’s history.

Thanks for the post…I have been looking for other Memorial Day postings in addition to mine and I applaud your post. (found you via Blogrush by the way…)
