Happy Saturday! Good News for June 7, 2008
Good Saturday to you! Here are a few encouraging current events:
Pacific Ocean Dolphin Populations Improving
The population of Northeastern offshore spotted and eastern spinner dolphins in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean is increasing after having been severely depleted because of accidental death in the tuna purse-seine fishery between the years of 1960 and 1990.
Researchers say that there is a need to continue to monitor dolphin populations by comprehensive ecosystem research cruises. They also need to conduct an updated dolphin stock assessment that will include additional information on dolphin life history, fishery mortality, and the ecosystem.
China has now banned free plastic bags common at supermarkets and is ordering customers to be charged for any they use.
The rules took effect June 1 and come while the country tries to tackle a significant source of litter.
The bags also are banned from all forms of public transportation (buses, trains and planes) and from airports and scenic locations.
Britain’s Oldest Man Celebrates 112 Years
Henry Allingham, thought to be one of three surviving UK World War I veterans, celebrated his 112th birthday with a VIP lunch and fly-past. He is also the last surviving original member of the Royal Air Force, which was formed 90 years ago.
“The more birthdays I enjoy, the longer I live.” ~ Henry Allingham
