When Free Is Not Really Free

Posted at 9:30 pm under This and That

If you watch late night television, you’re familiar with the freecreditreportdotcom commercials…you know…the poor guy who’s forced to live with his in-laws, or work as a waiter, or buy a junky car because his credit was ruined…and how if he had just signed up for a “free” credit report he could have avoided all of these horrible problems.

Well…it turns out that these “free” credit reports actually are free with a trial membership that you have to enroll in. And then if you’re not careful, the membership will kick in to a $12.95 per month charge after 30 days. This is slipped very quickly and unobtrusively by the potential customer and is missed by many.

The other very important point I need to make here is that Congress made it possible for you to see your credit report every year for free. There is absolutely no reason for you to pay anyone for this service. In September 2005, every consumer in America was granted the right to obtain a free copy of his or her credit report every year.

If you are concerned about identity theft and you want a service that can and will REALLY help you, then do check out Lifelock. Here you will find a real solution to these real problems…not a made up fantasy.
