Protection and Deterrence Provided by Video Surveillance
At the hotel where we are staying right now, a family who is also here attending the same conference had their vehicle stolen a few days ago. I can only imagine the dismay, disbelief, and sense of violation they must be feeling…as well as the shock they felt when they first realized that their truck was gone!
The hotel security utilizes video surveillance cameras and they were able to capture the entire crime as it occurred…unfortunately, that was not enough to catch the criminals and it appears as if they succeeded in getting away with our friends’ vehicle. I have no idea whether the video cameras are visible as I’m not sure what I would be looking for, but this would be a great crime deterrent if surveillance cameras were obviously mounted in common areas. I’ve even heard of police cameras being mounted in high-crime areas as a means of deterring crime and gang related activity.
I can think of many different businesses and uses for hardware that will serve businesses for control of crime and other such activities. This would include bar code label printers, barcode scanners, and a large selection of security cameras and related systems. IT Planet is a great source for this type of equipment. They offer free tech support, free shipping, and a very extensive selection. Anyone in need of equipment of this type will find it here at a very competitive price.

My company’s using Surveillance Cameras as well. And it’s been proven pretty useful. Maybe that cam position wasn’t proper enough? They might have messed up its angle so it couldn’t give perfect picture for the incident.

I understand where you are coming from, and the fact that video cameras are already there this shouldn’t even be an issue…. but!
What bothers me is that we as a culture are giving away our privacy and liberty for ’security’ and that a large amount of people are willing to give up even more liberty to feel more secure (notice I said feel and not actually be).
Even private businesses having security cameras is invasion of privacy, IMO. As for governments, well, it goes a bit further. Do you think the Nazis would have used papers if they had better technology? No, they would have just used microchips and to track down the Jews who wouldn’t leave, they would have used the internet and phone taps.
You may think this is just being paranoid, but so did 99% of the Jews in 1937. They were only papers, right?

Hopefully, technology will one day come up with a way to stall the car until the owner can repeat a string of words which will start it when it detects their voice ONLY.

Blackzero – I have a hard time understanding how the hotel cameras were able to record the crime, yet the thieves were successful in actually getting away with the truck! What good are the cameras?!?
Gary – You know…I agree with much of what you wrote…and I don’t think you’re being paranoid. The “security” that technology like this is supposed to provide seems to be lacking and I have to wonder if we just aren’t being given the whole story behind the use of a lot of this surveillance. Your reference to the Nazis is a eye-opener!
Jacqueline – great idea! That would be a really good way to stop auto theft.
