Happy Saturday! Good News for November 1, 2008

It’s November! Unreal! Hope your weekend is off to a great start. Here are a few GOOD NEWS stories that may help.

Woman Born Without Arms Earns Pilot’s License in Historic First

Jessica Cox, of Tucson, AZ, hasn’t allowed being born without arms to stop her from flying. Cox passed her checkride Friday October 10th after several months of training. Cox does not use prosthetic arms and so uses her feet to control the plane.

Cox encourages people with disabilities to consider flying because it empowers one and also helps others realize that people with disabilities have these options just like people without disabilities.

The Great Sockathon: Change Your Socks, Change the World

The goal is to raise $1 million for the Sierra Club and a million pairs of socks to donate to homeless. Thus…The Sierra Club Great Sockathon.

The Sockathon focuses on the Sierra Club, which is an organization that serves and protects wild life and forests. The donations of socks during this Fall and Winter season will be well received by homeless people.

On November 1 (today), there will be a 24 hour online Sockathon event where people all over America can buy socks and participate in fund-raising and benefit. Order socks today at Sierra Club Socks!

Solar Fuels Nevada Economy

The American Southwest is one of the best solar resources in the world. Nevada is now a hot bed for the solar industry. There are many benefits, but the most significant are green jobs and billions of investment dollars pouring into this desert economy.

The Ausra Solar Thermal Power Factory opened a few months ago in Las Vegas. This is the largest plant of its kind in the world and it employs 50 factory workers. The plant can generate 700 MW of solar panels and this can produce enough power for 500,000 homes.

The factory will produce giant mirrors and absorber tubes that are used for solar power plants. This technology uses the sun to generate heat and spin turbines. These mirrors follow the sun and reflect it onto fixed absorber tubes.

Solar projects totaling more than 10,000 MW have land requests from the Bureau of Land Management in Southern Nevada. If constructed, these solar plants would bring over $40 billion of investment to Nevada.
