Colorado Schools to Eliminate Sale of Sodas

sodaThe Colorado Board of Education says schools under its jurisdiction will no longer be allowed to sell sodas (including diet sodas) or other sugary drinks in vending machines and cafeterias. The board hopes this will help students change from unhealthy eating habits to healthy ones.

The new regulations will allow the sale of ‘low-fat milk, low-fat flavored milk, and milk substitutes in schools statewide. Elementary and middle schools will allow juices to be sold and high schools can offer sports drinks and other unspecified low-calorie beverages.

This decision was made even though money from soda companies help underwrite student activities.

What is the Greatest Gift You’ve Received? What is the Greatest Gift You’ve Given?

The greatest gift I have ever received cannot be measured in dollars and cents. There is no price tag that can be placed on my family because they are priceless. I am a very fortunate and blessed person because I have a caring and loving extended family, a wonderful and supportive husband, 8 of the greatest and coolest kids I’ve ever met, and two of the most adorable and sweet grandkids anyone could ever be blessed with.

Now that I’ve gone on and on about my wonderful family, it makes sense for me to talk for a minute about what a great service C’Elle has for families that want to protect themselves and each other.

C’elle’s stem cell technology enables women to safely and easily collect their potentially life-saving stem cells that are found in menstrual blood. Miraculously, C’elle menstrual stem cells have shown themselves able to differentiate into other cell types like heart muscle, cartilage, nerve and bone stem cells. This means that it may be possible to treat major diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, MS, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. It also has potential for cosmeceutical applications like anti-aging and wound-healing.

These menstrual stem cells will ALWAYS be a match for the woman donor and they may possibly match her first degree relatives. This is just simply an amazing chance to have far-reach benefits in the lives of the people you love.

So…I have to ask…what is the greatest gift you have ever received? And…what might be the greatest gift you might ever give?

Receiving and Passing On the Noblesse Oblige Award

I received an award last week that was such an honor my brain is still swimming that me and this little ol’ blog were recogized in the context of what this award is recognizing. This blog is closing in on one year old. I write several blogs, but this one is just somehow “special.” My blogs are all different, but for some reason, this blog speaks my heart more than any of my others. I write about the things that I think are important here. I yell about them sometimes! I want people to hear these important things that need to be heard. It’s not all about bad news, though…even though sometimes it seems it is. I think my favorite posts to write on Lofty Matters are my “Good News” posts that I try to do every weekend. In these posts, I write about at least three current events that are absolutely positively GOOD news! This never fails to raise my spirits at least a little bit…sometimes a lot!

My deepest and most heart-felt thanks go out to Windmill for thinking of me and my blog and passing this award on to me. I am honored.

So, without further delay, I proudly display my
