Yahoo Will Limit Info on Searches
In response to growing concerns from privacy advocates, Yahoo has stated that it will limit the time it holds personally identifiable information related to searches to 90 days.
Yahoo’s new data retention policy is now the most restrictive among the major search engines and is expected to place pressure on Google and MSN to also shorten their information retention times as well.
Previously, Yahoo retained search logs for 13 months. In September, Google began to remove portions of personally identifiable information related to searches after nine months. MSN currently retains their information for 18 months.
It is not yet clear whether these privacy protection moves will sway consumers to switch to different search engines. Last year, Ask.com began a new feature they call AskEraser that allows users to search anonymously. This new feature reportedly had little effect on Ask.com’s popularity.
Google is the leading search engine commanding 63% of search queries in the US.
