No Poo’ers

Ready to try something different?

Does the idea of skipping shampoo sound scary? Some dermatologists say going a few extra days between shampoos or eliminating it entirely could improve your hair health.

“No poo” has become something of an underground beauty trend. There are beauty mavens who believe they’ve found hair care’s dirty little secret and there are environmentally minded people who want to use fewer plastics and products with fewer chemicals.

Europeans and Australians have a more lax attitude toward shampooing. In the US the thought of going more than 48 hours without shampoo is not popular. But the idea seems to be catching on as more people are asking about it.

Modern shampoo has been around since the 1930s. In the decades that followed, it became one of America’s most heavily advertised products. The original harsh formulas meant that most women were washing their hair only once a week. But as formulas got gentler daily shampooing became the norm.

This trend toward everyday shampooing might have triggered a vicious cycle because shampoo cleanses by stripping the hair of its natural oils. This causes the scalp to produce more oil in response and makes it impossible for some to skip shampoo for even one day without the greasies.

For a natural alternative, mix one teaspoon of baking soda with one cup of water. Shake it well and pour it onto your hair. Let it sit for several minutes and rinse. This alternative absorbs oil without the use of chemicals. At first this might result in some very bad hair days. Some stylists say that’s because once the shampoo is no longer stripping the hair of its natural oils every day, the scalp must learn to scale back production of those oils.

Anyone know of any alternative acne treatments?
