Wi-Fi to Come in a Faster, Short-Range Flavor
The industry that supports Wi-Fi is adopting a new technology that should boost data speeds more than 10 times at short distances. The technology will take two years to show up in products. The first place might be Blu-ray players that can send their HD video signal wirelessly to compatible TV sets.
A separate group has developed technology to use the same frequency band with the same goals. WirelessHD is further along in development. The focus of WirelessHD was originally only for video and audio streaming, but it has recently expanded to include data networking.
Satellites Spot World’s Biggest Beaver Dam
A Canadian ecologist has located the world’s largest beaver dam in northwestern Canada using Google satellite technology.
Jean Thie located the 2,788-foot dam using Google Earth and NASA technology. The dam is situated in northern Alberta’s Wood Buffalo National Park and stretches more than eight football fields. The dam sits in a corner of a park and is “the size of Switzerland” in an area surrounded by heavily forested marshland.
