A New Jersey woman gave birth to her first baby on a commuter train to New York City.
Rabita Sarkar, of Harrison, N.J., had been feeling contraction-like pains, but didn’t think they were real. She and her husband decided to go into the city to the hospital for a quick check.
On the train Sarkar started feeling more frequent contractions. She told her husband to check what was happening. Her husband looked and saw that the baby’s head was emerging.
Another woman helped the husband deliver the baby on the train at around 10 a.m. Other riders offered encouragement and someone offered a jacket to warm the baby.
Officials turned the train into an express to arrive at the final stop as quickly as possible. Emergency personnel met the train and escorted the family to the hospital.
