Beejay Janiga, 85, teaches five fitness classes a week to people mostly her junior. Although her students are physically younger, they usually can’t keep up with her.
Janiga plays upbeat music including a variety of genres, leading over 60 “mature adults” in cardio, stretching and weight conditioning exercise.
Janiga also has expertise leading a dance troupe, so she added a few dance steps in addition to marching, squats and arm swings.
Janiga teaches Pilates, conditioning and chair-based classes through Irvine Valley College’s emeritus program. She possesses a physical education degree from San Diego State. 60 years ago, Janiga began exercising to get back in shape after having a baby. She was soon asked to teach classes.
Janiga’s students work out at their own level. Some wear workout clothes and others wear slacks and dress shoes.
