Two Cyclists Pedaling Encourage Others With Disabilities

Florin Georgescu and Alexandru Racanel are biking 1,300 miles from a Romanian city to the London Olympics on a tandem bike. Their goal is to dispel notions that people with disabilities have limitations.

“In Romania, we still struggle against this kind of mentality that if you are a person with some kind of disability, people think you can’t do many things,” said Georgescu.

Georgescu, 37, became blind at age 14 due to a degenerative disease present at birth.

The journey across Europe has had its difficulties, including several flat tires and problems with a bicycle chain. Other challenges include stretches of busy traffic, rain and high temperatures. The team planned to travel up to 75 miles a day. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to travel more than 50 miles a day in current conditions.
