From raising high tides to making dogs howl… It may even wake you up in the middle of the night with bright moonbeams. If a moonbeam woke you up on the night of May 5th, 2012, I hope you got up to take a look. This Month’s full Moon is a “super Moon” which means that it looks up to14% bigger and 30% brighter.

The scientific term is “perigee moon.” Full Moons that happen on the perigee side of the Moon’s orbit seem especially big and bright.

This occurred on May 5th at 11:34 pm EDT when the Moon reaches perigee. One minute later, the Moon will line up with Earth and the sun to look brilliantly full. The timing is almost perfect.

Folklore tradition is that all kinds of strange things happen under a full Moon. Hospital admissions go up, the crime rate increases and people behave in weird ways. Even the word “lunacy” comes from the Latin word for “Moon.”

My second-oldest son is graduating in about three weeks. Last evening, he just finished his last hurdle before he takes the graduation walk and this was a big one. Our high school requires all students to do a senior project, involving 20 hours of community service. They need to submit a proposal, have it accepted and then perform their community service, documenting it with photos and journal entries. The final step is creating a portfolio and then delivering a 7-minute presentation to a panel of judges.

Last night, David delivered his presentation. I’m happy to say that he passed with flying colors and those graduation invitations that I just sent out a few days ago will not be wasted!

I was very impressed with the invitations that we ordered. In fact, they reminded me of wedding invitations, they were so nice and classy! We had a tri-fold invitation, engraved with his full name and all the details of his school. We also had inner and outer enveloped with seals for sealing the envelopes. We even had transparent address labels with his entire name printed on them.

All-in-all, very classy.

Now, to make the party as nice as the invitations! That will be a challenge. I haven’t quite determined my menu yet. I will have lots of decorations that I saved from his older brother’s graduation party, so maybe I can cut some corners by reusing those decorations. Have you thrown a party lately? It’s unbelievably expensive!

Anyway, I definitely recommend getting engraved invitations with your child’s name and school information. It really sets the stage for a perfect graduation and a stellar party. Your child is worth it, right? You only graduate from high school once! Then it’s on to the real world. In David’s case, this will mean entering the Marine Corps.

Benjamin Lerman Coady recently questioned the accuracy of an exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Benjamin is a seventh-grader at Renbrook School. with a fascination of history, he reads his textbooks avidly.

Recently mother and son were at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Benjamin didn’t know what to expect at the art museum. Benjamin thought he would see art on a wall. Instead, he learned that The Metropolitan is also about history.

Benjamin and his mother looked at the permanent exhibit about the Byzantine Empire. A map of the empire was on display and Benjamin began to check the dates. The map should have shown when the empire was at its largest, but Spain and a portion of Africa were missing.

Benjamin told a museum docent about the mistake. Later, he received a letter from the museum and then later an email confirming that he was correct and that the exhibit had been wrong.
The museum has corrected the error.

The Zaner-Bloser company recognized 7-year-old Annie Clark with its very first Nicholas Maxim Award.

Nicholas was a Maine fifth-grader who was born without hands or lower arms. He entered the company’s penmanship contest one year ago. His work was so impressive that judges created a new category for students with disabilities.

The girl’s parents have nine children — three biological and six adopted from China. Annie is one of four children with a disability that affects their hands or arms. The Family also has an adopted child and a biological daughter with Down syndrome.

My parents bought two Abysinian kittens many years ago — brothers they were — and my mom named them Jazz and Java. The brothers grew into beautiful cats, inseparable and very attached to each other.

As it often happens, the kitties aged and one began to fade faster than the other. Last July, they sent Java to the rainbow bridge and Jazz was forced to face life without his brother.

Jazz did not adjust well to Java’s absence, and he began yowling almost constantly throughout the day. Little by little, Jazz also began to fade. This last weekend, my parents were forced to say goodbye to Jazz as well.

Now the house is quiet and my parents are wondering if and when they will want to replace the kitty brothers.

Whenever they’re ready, I think I will tell them about the Pets Aware Pet Shop and pet care. This is an excellent place to learn about various pets available for purchase. You can also learn about pet care on this website as well, to ensure that you give your pets the best care and home possible. I think there’s something here for novice pet owners as well as experts.

Rest in peace Jazz and Java!

Young children at an elementary school have forced penpal relationships with people around the country, sharing stories and reading interesting tales from people in very different living circumstances.

While the modern advances of technology make communication instantaneous, sometimes taking the extra time to write help students appreciate a simpler time.
